(Cathedral Church of St. John The Divine) 中进行。

Holy Trinity Cathedral, Shanghai

May God bless the City of Shanghai. May God bless the Republic of China.

    Church Sermon (Mar. 18, 2007) -

65th - Sunday Service at Grace Church
    Date: March 18, 2007  7:00 p.m. - 8:20 p.m.
    Bible: Romans 1:14-15, 3:23, 13:8
Theme: The Three Debts in Romans |
    Preacher:
    Keywords: Debtor; Fall Short; Owe

    Text of the Lection:

I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish
    1:15所以情愿尽我的力量,将福音也传给你们在罗马的人。
-- hence my eagerness to proclaim the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
    3:23 因为世人都犯了罪,亏缺了 神的荣耀,
    since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
    13:8 凡事都不可亏欠人,惟有彼此相爱,要常以为亏欠,因为爱人的就完全了律法。
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
    Comments of Sermon:

    Church Sermon (Feb. 25, 2007) -

64th - Sunday Service at Grace Church
    Date: February 25, 2007  7:00 p.m. - 8:20 p.m.
    Bible: Isaiah 43:10; John 6:63
Theme: The Faith of Christians |
    Preacher:
    Keywords: Believe; Save; Faith; Life

    Text of the Lection:

    Isaiah
You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.

    John
…The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

    Comments of Sermon:

    我信我主耶穌基督,上帝獨生的子;因聖靈感孕,由童貞女馬利亞所生;在本丟彼拉多手下受難,被釘于十字架,受死,埋葬;降在陰間;第三天從死人中復活;升天,坐在全能父上帝的右邊;將來必從那裏降臨,審判活人死人。
    我信聖靈;我信聖而公之教會;我信聖徒相通;我信罪得赦免;我信身體復活;我信永生。阿們。

    Apostles' Creed

    1) I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
    2) And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord;
    3) Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary;
    4) Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell;
    5) The third day he rose again from the dead;
    6) He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
    7) From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
    8) I believe in the Holy Ghost;
    9) I believe in the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
    10) The forgiveness of sins;
    11) The resurrection of the body;
    12) And the life everlasting. Amen.

    2. 生命需要被拯救:

    故事:有一孩童掉落水中,拼命挣扎呼救。第一个人经过,自言自语:“哎,顽皮的孩童啊,乱走乱跑,活该跌入水中,父母白养了”,摇摇头便走了;第二个人经过,说道:“哎,这条路歪斜陡峭,稍不小心便会落入水中,真是可怜啊”;第三个人经过,二话不说立刻跃入水中,将那个孩童救上岸来。

    寓意:当我们需要被拯救的时候,那些冷酷的说教、高谈阔论、抑或是居高临下的怜悯,都不是待拯救者真正需要的。而我们真正需要的,正是那双确实实施拯救的手。

    人们活在罪中;这种罪可以是不同的。有些人活在无尽的或是时有时无的痛苦中,有些人活在迷茫和彷徨之中,有些人活在看似物质丰厚实则心灵虚空之中,有些人活在看似人群围绕实则内心孤独之中……或许有些人会极力否认自己的软弱,但实际上这只是自欺欺人而已。世上的每个人都需要被拯救。

    3. 生命本身是无可伪装也无可压制的神赐的力量:

    一尊由行为艺术者模拟的人体雕塑,再如何将其伪装为死物,也必定会露出其有生命的破绽;一尊由雕塑大师塑造的人体雕塑,无论雕塑水平如何精湛,也必定无法掩饰其无生命的本质。

    4. 活出信仰的必然性:

    (1) 一切生命必有其源头。圣经《创世记》中便有极其精练的概括:各种被 神创造的生命“各从其类”。

    (2) 因着信仰,获得生命:

    John
    5:26 因为父怎样在自己有生命,就赐给他儿子也照样在自己有生命;
    For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;
    5:40 然而你们不肯到我这里来得生命。
Yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known.

    (3) 体现信仰,充实智慧:基督徒的信仰要通过行为体现,因此基督徒在人群中必然会显得不同与众。如同大智若愚,有大智慧的人因超出常人而不被理解;基督徒的出淤泥而不染,同样会被很多世人所不解。但基督徒依然要富有爱心,乐于助人,自信而谦卑,热情而平和。

    5. 活出信仰的保证:

    (1) 宝贝的圣经;
    (2) 耶稣的榜样;
    (3) 圣灵的感动;
    Galatians
    5:22-23 圣灵所结的果子,就是仁爱、喜乐、和平、忍耐、恩慈、良善、信实、温柔、节制。这样的事,没有律法禁止。
By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.

    Church Sermon (Feb. 11, 2007) - Rest

63rd - Sunday Service at Community Church
    Date: February 11, 2007  10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
    Bible: Psalms 46:1-3
    Theme: Selah | 细拉
    Preacher:
    Keywords: Rest; Pause

    Text of the Lection:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
    46:2 所以地虽改变,山虽摇动到海心,
    Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
    46:3 其中的水虽砰訇翻腾,山虽因海涨而战抖,我们也不害怕。(细拉)
though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah

    Comments of Sermon:

Don’t place a full stop where God places a comma.

    Christmas Message 2006

"For unto us a child is born ... and His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

    Isaiah 9:6

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

    Isaiah 9:6 (NRSV)

For centuries, patient men and women listened to the words of prophets and lived in joyful expectation of the coming Messiah. Their patience was rewarded when a young virgin named Mary welcomed God's plan with great faith, and a quiet birth in a little town brought hope to the world. For more than two millennia, Christians around the world have celebrated Christmas to mark the birth of Jesus and to thank the Almighty for His grace and blessings.

In this season of giving, we also remember the universal call to love our neighbors. Millions of compassionate souls take time during the holidays to help people who are hurt, feed those who are hungry, and shelter those who need homes.

The simple story of Christmas speaks to every generation and holds a sense of wonder and surprise. During this time of joy and peace, may we be surrounded by the love of family and friends and take time to reflect on the year ahead. I pray that this season will be a time of happiness in every home and a time of peace throughout the world. Merry Christmas.

Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!

    Christmas Carols

    When Christmas Comes To Town

I'm wishing on a star, and trying to believe.
That even though it's far, he'll find me at Christmas Eve.
I guess that Santa is busy, cause he never comes around.
I think of him when Christmas comes to town.

The best time of the year, when everyone comes home.
With all this Christmas tear, it's hard to be alone.
Putting up the Christmas tree, with friends you come around.
It's so much fun when Christmas comes to town.

    Presents for the children wrapped in red and green;
All the things I've heard about, but never really see.
No one will be sleeping on the night of Christmas Eve,
    Hoping Santa's on his way...

When Santa's sleigh bells ring, I listen all around.
The herald angels sing, I never hear a sound.
And all the dreams of children, once lies will all be found.
That's all I want when Christmas comes to town...
That's all I want when Christmas comes to town...

60th - Sunday Service at Community Church
    Date: December 10, 2006  10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (Accompanied by Teng Chien)
    Bible: Romans 8: 35-39
Theme: Who Will Separate Us from the Love of Christ? |
    Preacher:
Keywords: God's Love in Christ Jesus

    Text of the Lection:

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    Comments of Sermon:

59th - Sunday Service at Grace Church
    Date: October 29, 2006  7:00 p.m. - 8:10 p.m.
    Bible: Matthew 26:36-46
Theme: Jesus’ Final Praying and Awakening at Gethsemane |
    Preacher:
    Keywords: Grieved; Stay Awake

    Text of the Lection:

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated.
Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.”
And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.”
Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?
Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.
Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.”

    Comments of Sermon:

58th - Sunday Service at Grace Church
    Date: September 3, 2006  7:00 p.m. - 8:50 p.m.
    Bible: Matthew 22:1-14
Theme: God’s Love and Justice |
    Preacher:
    Keywords: Be Called; Be Chosen

    Text of the Lection:

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying:
“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.
He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come.
Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’
    22:5 那些人不理就走了。一个到自己田里去;一个作买卖去;
But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business,
while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them.
The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.
Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’
Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
"But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe,
and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he was speechless.
Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
For many are called, but few are chosen.”

    Comments of Sermon:

    Revelation
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.”

    John
    3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”

    2. 上帝的慈爱与公义:上帝的慈爱 —“被召的人多”;上帝的公义 —“选上的人少”。

    Comments of Sermon:

    • 祷告的信实 | Aspects of Faith in Prayers

    Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse;
    Psalms
    95:1 来啊,我们要向耶和华歌唱,向拯救我们的磐石欢呼。
O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.

(His Immanence):1 Corinthians 14:25

    1 Corinthians
After the secrets of the unbeliever’s heart are disclosed, that person will bow down before God and worship him, declaring, “God is really among you.”

55th - Baptism Service at New Grace Church

    Date: June 29, 2006  07:00 p.m. - 08:30 p.m.

    Bible: Romans 6:1-11

Theme: The Meaning of Baptism |

    Keywords: Baptism

    Text of the Lection:

What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound?

By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it?

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin.

For whoever has died is freed from sin.

But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.

The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

    Comments of Sermon:

Two Kinds of Incomplete Faith

Thus says the LORD: As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who live in Samaria be rescued, with a corner of a couch and part of a bed.

Mark 5
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed: "Do not fear, only believe."

The Light of the Body

    Luke

"No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar, or under a bushel basket, but on the lampstand so that those who enter may see the light.

Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light; but if it is not healthy, your body is full of darkness.

Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness.

If then your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be as full of light as when a lamp gives you light with its rays."

Examining the Faith

    Text of the Lection:

    Luke

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.

They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

but when they went in, they did not find the body.

While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them.

The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?

He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,

that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."

    1 Corinthians

Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead?

    15:13 若没有死人复活的事,基督也就没有复活了。
    If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised;

    15:14 若基督没有复活,我们所传的便是枉然,你们所信的也是枉然。
and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain.

Theme: Trichotomy of Spirituality |

    Keywords: Beloved; Spiritual Growth

    Text of the Lection:

My beloved is mine and I am his; he pastures his flock among the lilies.

I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine; he pastures his flock among the lilies.

I am my beloved's, and his desire is for me.

Make haste, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or to a young stag upon the mountains of spices!

    Comments of Sermon:

    Christmas Message 2005

'Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel' which means, God with us.

    Matthew 1:23

More than 2,000 years ago, a virgin gave birth to a Son, and the God of heaven came to Earth. Mankind had received its Savior, and to those who had dwelled in darkness, the light of hope had come. Each Christmas, we celebrate that first coming anew, and we rejoice in the knowledge that the God who came to Earth that night in Bethlehem is with us still and will remain with us forever.

Christmas is a season of hope and joy, a time to give thanks for the blessing of Christ's birth and for the blessings that surround us every day of the year. We have much to be thankful for in this country, and we have a responsibility to help those in need. Jesus calls us to help others, and acts of kindness toward the less fortunate fulfill the spirit of the Christmas season.

On Christmas, we pray for freedom, justice, and peace on Earth. We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and for our freedom, we remember our nation's Founding Father Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and the Republic's first President Chiang Kai-Shek, and lots of our glorious National Armed Forces which contributed to the Northern Expedition, the World War II and the Civil War. We remember those who are abroad, overseas or home and with lofty ideas to rebuild the Republic and advance the cause of freedom and peace, and ask for God's blessing on their loved ones. We ask God to watch over all of our citizens of the Republic. Our entire Nation is grateful to them and prays for their safty and success.

NOW, THERFORE, I, JEREMY C.K. SHIH, do hereby send my best wishes for a blessed and merry Christmas.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto record the date this twenty-fourth day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Republicanization of the Republic of China the ninety-forth.

    Presents for the children wrapped in red and green;

Jasmine? Jaqueline? I don't know. Maybe.

And now comes... The True Meaning of the CHRISTMAS.

    Description in The New Testament

“Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means, ‘God is with us.’ When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.”

    - Matthew 1:18-25

“In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifs of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.”

    - Matthew 2:1-12

“In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see – I am binging you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!’”

    - Luke 2:8-14

Remarks on Christmas and My Family

We are all on the journey going Home.

I'm looking forward to the Christmas Eve.

This is a witness, and also a prayer...

May GOD continue to bless my family, relatives, my intimate friends, and every one and each of my acquaintanceship or other one else.

Remarks on Christmas and My Country

May GOD continue to bless the Republic of China, and watch over the people of the Republic!
